Breast Cancer Awareness Month: The Link Between Vitamin D and Women’s Health

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, where annual campaigns emerge to help drive awareness, to raise funds for research, and to honor those touched by the disease. In the United States, breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, with over 3.8 million people having been diagnosed with the disease in America alone.

Early detection through self-examinations and regular visits to your doctor are key in helping to prevent the spread of cancer if caught in the breasts, and various preventative measures exist that are believed to help reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. These include staying active and maintaining a healthy body weight, limiting alcohol consumption, and practicing a diet rich in vitamins and minerals, including vitamin D.

Vitamin D is known to help with muscle and bone health support, as well as immune support and nervous system function. Studies have also suggested that women who are low in vitamin D may have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

Most people receive vitamin D through sun exposure and diet, though it can be difficult to maintain proper levels of the vitamin without supplementation. People who avoid direct sun exposure and regularly wear sunscreen (both great strategies to help reduce the risk of skin cancer) can find themselves with lower levels of vitamin D, as can people who avoid foods like fatty fish and mushrooms, which are high in the vitamin.

Vitamin D3 is a powerful supplement that can combat vitamin D deficiency and can support overall breast health. You can find vitamin D3 in various forms, including the following supplements offered by Futurebiotics:

In addition to lifestyle changes and incorporating vitamin D3 into your diet, it is important to maintain doctor’s visits, attend regular mammograms if recommended by your doctor, and perform self-examinations once a month. Look for symptoms such as lumps, thickness, discharge (if not breast feeding), unusual changes in size or shape, unusual nipple changes, dry and peeling skin, rashes on the breast, or dimpling of the skin. These can all be signs of breast cancer and should be brought to your doctor’s attention immediately.
